This classic orangery was commissioned to extend a charming period home on the edge of Bristol, transforming both the aesthetic and functional aspects of this former farmhouse.
Under a full turnkey building contract, a service unique to David Salisbury, this project exemplifies craftsmanship, peace of mind, and timeless design.
When it comes to seamlessly blending period property architecture with modern living space, few projects showcase this synergy as beautifully as this recent collaboration, designed by one of David Salisbury’s most experienced designers, Simon Phipps.
Client Design Brief & Challenges
The homeowners of this period farmhouse sought an extension that would enhance their living space without compromising the traditional charm of their property.
They envisioned a room filled with natural light that would serve as a multi-purpose space for informal dining, entertaining, and relaxing. The extension needed to complement the existing architecture and be sympathetic to its surroundings.
David Salisbury handled all aspects of planning required – whilst not listed, the property is situated within a Conservation Area and on the edge of an AONB, within the Green Belt.
Design Approach
Simon’s design for the orangery embraced classic proportions, including symmetrical fenestration, elegant cornices, and a large central roof lantern. These details ensured the new structure felt like a natural extension of the original building, rather than an afterthought.
Measuring approximately 7.2m wide by 4.2m deep, the total base area was some 32.5 square metres.
Painted in the soft, neutral tone of Shadow Stone, from our own unique colour palette, the orangery complemented the period property’s existing façade, while its large windows and doors invited an abundance of natural light into the space.

What set this project apart was David Salisbury’s exclusive full turnkey design and build offering.
