Tucked away in the heart of the Gloucestershire countryside, this charming period cottage was full of character but short on practical living space. The owners dreamed of creating a brighter, more open living area that would connect them to their garden and provide a place for family and friends to gather in comfort.

A Vision for Modern Country Living
From the outset, the brief was clear: extend the cottage in a way that respected its heritage while introducing a sense of light and space that the original rooms lacked. The owners wanted a design that felt as though it had always belonged – elegant, timeless and crafted with care.
Working closely with the homeowners, our experienced designer Simon Phipps designed a stunning painted timber orangery, measuring approximately 4m by 4m, that complements the cottage’s original architectural features.
The design includes generously proportioned windows and French doors that open out onto the garden, flooding the interior with natural light and creating an effortless flow between indoors and outdoors.
The subtle paint finish, Eagle Sight, from our own curated colour palette, adds a soft contrast to the warm tones of the existing property, enhancing the sense of harmony between old and new.
Inside, the orangery serves as a welcoming open plan living space. High quality joinery, refined architectural details, and the perfect proportions reflect David Salisbury’s meticulous craftsmanship and design expertise.
The result is a room that feels both expansive and intimate – ideal for relaxed mornings, long family lunches, and evening entertaining.
New Kitchen Forms a Seamless Addition
In order to work in parallel with the orangery design, the owners commissioned David Salisbury for the next stage of their home transformation: a bespoke luxury kitchen to complete the new living area.
One of our leading kitchen designers, Jon Brookes, was appointed to design a space that not only looked stunning but functioned beautifully – a kitchen at the heart of the home that could transition effortlessly from cooking to socialising.
Jon approached the project with the same expertly tailored design ethos that defines every kitchen project that we deliver. Every element, from the beautifully made, solid oak cabinetry to the choice of ironmongery and finishes, was tailored to the homeowners’ tastes and lifestyle.
Painted in the subtle shade of Ravello, a complementary tone to the orangery, it ties the two spaces together visually.
Premium appliances, with a Lacanche range cooker forming a focal point, stunning quartz worktops and subtle lighting complete the picture, delivering a kitchen that feels as luxurious as it is functional.

After studying Product Design & Visualisation at the University of Bournemouth and Psychology at the University of Gloucestershire, Simon moved back to Somerset from Cheltenham to work for David Salisbury in 2007. His design training along with 14 years’ experience with David Salisbury means his designs are as varied as his clients and their properties.
Simon enjoys the challenge of a difficult design and is passionate about getting the design right for his clients. He has a wealth of knowledge of working with the David Salisbury product and the cutting-edge technology behind it, which allows us to retain our market-leading quality. Outside of his work with David Salisbury, Simon’s time is taken up by his 2 children, 3 dogs and a horse!

As a senior designer recognised for delivering award-winning designs, Jon has built a reputation for attention to detail and outstanding customer service. Jon excels in guiding clients through the entire design journey, turning their vision into reality with precision and elegance.
Outside of work, he is passionate about cooking and experimenting with recipes from the places he travels, as well as hiking and exploring new trails.
