Sometimes it just has to be Oak!

Oak orangeries and oak framed extensions have always been a significant part of our business here at David Salisbury but, especially so in recent years, it has been a growing proportion of our overall sales.

As award-winning manufacturers of timber orangeries and garden rooms, we are perhaps best known for the types of project shown in these photos below: painted extensions that complement and improve the customer’s existing home.

But on regular occasions, our rustic oak buildings simply suit the surrounding environment and design brief of a particular project even more appropriately.

Take this example below of a quintessentially English thatched cottage in the midst of the stunning Dorset countryside. Our oak garden room has provided a seamless link between home and garden, creating a room full of natural light with French Doors allowing convenient access to the outside. The way the oak has weathered and turned a beautiful tone of silver grey is perfectly in-keeping with the period cottage and backdrop.

This weathered appearance is entirely down to customer choice. Here at David Salisbury, we will discuss these options as part of our complimentary design service. Typically, over time, our oak framed extensions will turn this shade of silver grey. However, we also offer an oiled finish which will retain more of its warm tones, for those wanting that slightly less rustic look.

Either way, we always manufacture using the finest quality oak available on the UK market. We invest in superior French Oak, the quality and specification of which we covered in detail in this previous Blog article. The key point from this is that we never manufacture from what is the more commonly used ‘Green Oak,’ which still has a high degree of moisture content (unless we are designing an oak garage or outbuilding) – meaning it can be more prone to shrinkage or movement. The seasoned, air dried oak that we use is a fundamental point of difference and how we exceed many of our competitors in terms of overall quality.

Interestingly, it is not just improving homes for customers that has created increased demand for our oak framed extensions – a number of our larger commercial building projects of recent years have been oak. Take a look at the recently completed Brent House Carvery to get some inspiration and read how this large oak orangery has transformed the dining experience at this well-known local venue.

Whilst we will always be synonymous with painted orangeries and garden rooms, oak framed extensions continue to be a growing part of our portfolio. As oak has been used in building properties since the 1500’s – and many of these buildings are still around today – the longevity of oak as a material for building cannot be argued.

As we say, sometimes it just has to be oak!
