Wettest Year Ever

floods in somerset

I took this picture yesterday from the top of a rise no more than half a mile from my house. That was before another downpour last night, but I am not venturing out yet to have look. I have lived in this house for 30 years and have never seen anything like it before.

Our American partner “Parish Conservatories” to whom we have supplied dozens of conservatories over the past 7 years has been in the eye of the storm. They operate their business from a small industrial unit in Connecticut and the roof has been blown clean off.

VAT on Extensions to Listed Buildings

Not the best news for this sector. The building industry as a whole was lobbying for a reduction of VAT on property extensions (new buildings are already zero rated). The argument was that this would help kick start construction which remains subdued after the 2008 crash.

Clearly that one was lost and the imposition of VAT on alterations to listed buildings will have the opposite effect – tending to slow construction activity. I notice that the notes accompanying the budget say that this will have a minimal macroeconomic effect.
