Transforming period home in the South Downs

This perfectly proportioned orangery provided the ideal complement for this period home in West Sussex.

Measuring 5.5m metres wide by 4m deep, the footprint of this orangery is close to a typical design brief we undertake here at David Salisbury in terms of size but, most importantly, fits the existing property as if it has always been there.

Expertly designed by John Westbrook, who has widespread experience of designing orangeries in West Sussex and the South Downs in particular, this bespoke orangery ticks all the boxes in terms of the design brief.

“Our clients were keen to add an extension to their existing kitchen and dining area. There were no windows on the rear house wall - only a small set of doors [shown in the ‘before’ photo above] – which therefore significantly limited the amount of light into the kitchen or afforded views onto the garden area,” John commented. “They felt that an orangery would bring in additional natural light into their kitchen as well as providing the perfect relaxing area with a great outlook onto their garden.”

This perfectly encapsulates some of the many benefits that an orangery can bring to your home and is most often what customers come to David Salisbury to seek advice for.

The house is of a distinctive flint and brick construction set in the South Downs National Park, so it was important that any addition would need to be of a similar construction so as to blend in with the surroundings and, of course, gain the relevant planning consents. Assisting with planning applications in sensitive areas is a particular area of expertise for David Salisbury and we employ specialist planning advisers who can assist with each case.

A non-standard, special grey paint finish was specified in order to match the finish of the existing windows and doors.

When it came to choosing the fenestration options, instead of trying to match the house windows which have a single horizontal glazing bar, it was decided to give the orangery its own distinctive look, with the glazing bars for the windows differing from the doors.

Comprehensively project managed by Wayne Chapman, from our experienced team of dedicated project managers, with wide-ranging head office support from Customer Account Manager Amy Cheeseborough, this orangery in West Sussex certainly fits the bill.

The final result complements the house perfectly and has become the favourite room at home for the whole family.
