Lifting The Conservatory Beam Over The House

Very long roof lantern

The Customer's design brief was to have one single lantern on this large orangery. Whilst David Salisbury Conservatories use laminated beams in all their structures, this job posed a particular challenge for both our drawing office and engineers. The beam sections had to be up-graded due to the calculated deflection and steel plates were added to the orangery framework. Once the design was finalised, the next challenge was how were we going to lift them into position?

With the beams being 11.5m in length and weighing 1/2 ton each we had no alternative but to use a crane. For this to happen, a full site survey took place to ascertain what size crane would be appropriate to both for weight and reach. Due to the restricted access and also to avoid a temporary road closure our specialist lifting contractor provided us with a 40 ton city crane which is designed for this type of work, together with a slinger, banks man and lift supervisor. It was a particularly difficult lift, as the crane driver was lifting blind, i.e. working the opposite side of the building. He had to rely 100% on the banks man to relay instructions over a 2-way radio and guide the beams into the required position. The beams then had to be lifted from the front of the property to the back (approx. 30mtrs) clearing the ridge of the property at 9mtrs and position on pre - set pad stones.

The sympathetic design of the orangery matched the aesthetics of the property and blended in well with the customers home. David Salisbury provided all design work, organised planning permission and building regulations and the customers were very happy with the service they received from start to finish.
